Smell Gas Near Your Thermador Range? Leave It to a Technician

A lingering gas odor near a range is a safety matter, not a repair to attempt yourself. These are the steps to take right away and why the search belongs to a professional.

Do these things first

A gas odor that lingers around the range calls for caution right away. Your priority is to avoid creating a spark or flame until the air is clear:

  • Do not touch light switches or plug in or unplug anything.
  • Do not light a match, lighter, or burner.
  • Turn the shutoff valve to closed, but only if it is easy to get to.
  • Open windows to let the room air out.
  • Leave the house with everyone inside if the odor is strong.

Step outside before you phone, and ring the gas company’s emergency number or ours.

Why smell alone cannot find the source

Once the area is safe, locating the actual leak is a job for detection equipment. Common sources include a loosened fitting, a worn valve that no longer closes tightly, or a problem somewhere along the supply line. None of these can be pinned down by sniffing around the cabinet, and a guess could leave the real source untouched.

What happens at the visit

A technician checks the connections and valves serving the range with the right instruments, repairs what is found, and confirms the work before the range goes back into regular use. If the odor appears only when a burner is lit, or only briefly at ignition, mention that when you call, since it helps narrow the search.

You can find more on this equipment on our range repair page.

Do not return until the odor is gone and the area has been cleared. If your gas utility is called, let them finish their check; our visit afterward then focuses on the appliance side, such as the range connection and its shutoff.

Once everyone is safe, give us a call to arrange an inspection. Our price is written and agreed before work starts, and repairs are covered by a 30-day workmanship warranty.
