Thermador UCVM30XS
Where a cooktop sits on an island or a peninsula and an overhead hood is not wanted, a downdraft like the UCVM30XS is the answer. It is a slim unit, 2 3/4″ thick and 31″ wide, that sits behind a 30″ cooktop and pulls steam and grease sideways and down. That puts the service work mostly inside the cabinet below, not on the wall.
The first thing we check is the cabinet: a duct that was crushed by a pot drawer, a loose connection, or a blower mounted with no room for air. This model has no damper, so cold air or odors can travel back through the duct when it is off, and we look at the exterior cap for that reason.
The cassette filters are aluminum and dishwasher-safe, so a reminder that will not clear usually means they were not reseated. We test all three speeds and the touch controls, then quote the repair.
Thermador describes them as easy-to-remove and dishwasher-safe aluminum filters. Check the manual for details. If a cassette is bent and won't sit flat after cleaning, we inspect and price a replacement.
Old grease in the cassettes or the duct can release odor, and this model has no damper to block air from the duct. We clean the filters and look at the exterior cap and duct.
Both. We test controls and filters from above, but the blower and ducting are reached through the cabinet below, which we clear before starting. We tell you in advance if the cabinet needs clearing.
