Thermador VCI248DS
A custom insert is the engine inside a hood someone else built. The VCI248DS is a 5 3/4-inch tall, 43 5/8-inch wide stainless insert that goes inside a cabinet, plaster or wood shell designed for the kitchen, and the trim around it belongs to the contractor, not to Thermador. For us, that means access: a call often starts with how to reach the blower and wiring within the enclosure.
The filters are aluminum-frame cassettes that the page describes as easy to remove and dishwasher-safe. A grease-heavy cassette is where we begin when a 48-inch cooktop seems poorly covered.
The controls are LED low-lift pushbuttons with three speeds and nothing else: no damper, no reminders. Thermador lists VCIN48JP as its successor for the discontinued insert. We make sure the replacement part we order fits the older design, and that the surrounding hood shell is not blocking air.
Thermador describes them as dishwasher-safe. We suggest checking the manual's wording on detergent and rack position, and that they are fully dry before reinstalling. Dry them completely.
Either can be. We listen to the blower with the shell open and look for panels or trim that rattle at the same speed. Often it is the shell, not the insert, that is buzzing.
It is a different design. Do not assume it will fit your enclosure without checking the dimensions. The VCIN48JP has its own 48-inch body and measurements, so we compare the old cutout, the depth and the duct position before anyone orders it.
