Thermador HMDW30WS
A custom insert like the HMDW30WS lives inside a cabinet or a hood surround that the cabinet maker built, so the first thing we deal with is access. The unit is only 17 9/16″ tall and 12″ deep, and its sliding canopy gives a flush front when closed, which means any noise tends to be transmitted into the wood around it.
When we are called, we check whether the insert is firmly secured, whether the surround touches the blower housing, and whether the canopy glides all the way out and back. We test all four speeds with the damper open, then the touch control and lighting.
Because it can be run ducted or recirculating, the duct size and the exit point shape the airflow more than the insert itself. A 30″ minimum distance above the cooktop is required, so we confirm that too. The mesh filters and reminder are checked last.
Often the slide is just dirty or the surround is pressing on it. We inspect the canopy track and fixing points before we consider replacing parts.
Blower vibration can transfer into a tight surround. We check the mounting, rubber isolation and wheel balance, and adjust so the insert is not touching the cabinet.
Operation depends on how it is installed in your cabinet. We test the touch control in all positions and confirm the fan starts and stops as expected.
