Thermador PH42GWS
Most of the calls we get on a connected hood like the PH42GWS are not about the blower at all. The hood is Wi-Fi enabled and controlled through an app, so a router change, a new password or an app update can leave it unreachable. Before we open anything, we find out whether the hood still shows on the home network and whether the app can see it.
It is meant to pair with an induction cooktop through Hood Sync, so the fan starts when the cooktop does. If that link breaks, we have to check both appliances, since the cause may be on either side.
The 42-inch Professional canopy also has a heat lamp, a damper and four fan speeds. The damper and the baffles are the mechanical checks. The hood is no longer available from Thermador, and no successor is listed, so we work from the specifications on the page.
Usually the home network is to blame. We check the signal at the hood, the router settings and whether the hood needs to be paired again before we consider the electronics.
The link depends on both appliances being connected and paired. We confirm each one separately, then re-pair them. That also tells us which appliance carries the problem, the hood or the cooktop, before any parts are ordered.
It is designed to keep food warm. If it stays cold, we test the lamp and its supply rather than the blower. Both lamps are checked separately.
