Thermador PRD486NLHU

What we most often repair on units like this

  1. Dehydrate mode that does not hold low heat in the secondary oven
  2. Half width variable grill element that fails to glow
  3. Convection Broil that is weak in the primary cavity
  4. Gas burner that ignites unevenly or drifts off
  5. Self-Clean that leaves the door latched

Few ranges give the smaller oven as much to do as the PRD486NLHU does: its 1.7 cu ft secondary cavity offers Dehydrate, Bake, Half width variable grill and Keep Warm. Cooks who use it for slow drying or small grilling jobs lean on the low-temperature end of the control, and that is where a sensor or element issue shows first.

We check the secondary oven separately. Dehydrate needs a steady low output, so we log the temperature over a full cycle; the Half width variable grill depends on a dedicated element that we test for continuity. In the 3 cu ft main oven, Convection Broil and Self-Clean are the demanding modes.

Thermador now shows the model as no longer available and names the PRD486WLHU as the successor. The 50 A, 240/208 V supply has no plug, so terminal connections are a standard check, as is the burner ignition on the dual fuel cooktop.

PRD486NLHUPRD486NLHU questions
The dehydrate setting dries food unevenly. Is the oven the cause?

It might be. Low-temperature modes depend on accurate sensing and a clean element. We record temperature over time and compare it with a probe thermometer before replacing the sensor or element.

Why does the half-width grill not glow?

The grill has its own heating element and relay in the 1.7 cu ft oven. We check continuity at the element, then the control output. A broken element is a common find.

Is it worth keeping a model Thermador lists as no longer available?

In many cases yes. The ovens and burners are serviceable, and we tell you before work starts if a part is difficult to source. The price is written and agreed first.
