What E3 means

On older PDR30/36/48 and PRG30/36/48 ranges, one flash of the blue oven light followed by a zero-flash second digit is how the control announces code 10, listed as E3. The legacy document describes it as an open oven temperature sensor, so the control cannot read how hot the cavity is. Do not carry this reading over to current Thermador ovens, where E3 differs.

Usual causes of E3

  • Oven temperature sensor circuit open (broken sensor or wire)
✓ A safe check worth trying

1. Note the light pattern before touching anything. 2. Turn the oven off and let the cavity cool completely. 3. Do not poke at the sensor inside the oven; it is delicate and its wiring runs behind the panels. 4. Restore power at the breaker after a short pause, and call us if the pattern is back.

! Why you should stop here
  • An open sensor circuit means the control is guessing at oven heat.
  • Testing it properly needs a meter and access behind the range.
  • On an older oven the cause is often one wire or connector, and we find which before quoting.
Taking off a panel yourself does not by default void a manufacturer warranty, yet it can lead to accidental damage, and some manufacturers attach their own service terms. Read your warranty paperwork, or ask us, before you decide.

E3E3 questions
Why can't the oven just ignore the sensor?

Without a temperature reading the control cannot hold a setting safely. That is why these legacy ranges flag the sensor and ask for service rather than guessing.

Are E3 and E4 on my old PRG range the same thing?

They are related but opposite. E3 is a sensor reading open, E4 is a sensor reading shorted. Each has its own light pattern, so a careful count helps us a lot.

Do you repair legacy ranges that are out of warranty?

Yes, we service older Thermador ranges. We confirm part availability by model number and give a written quote before any work begins. Tell us the full model number when you call.
