What F3 means

A flashing F3 on a legacy Thermador RDF or REF 30-inch range means the control found a sensor problem, an open or shorted oven sensor. The Care & Use manual lists F-3 together with F-1 under operational problems, and the service notes say oven sensors should read 1050 ohms at 75 F. Newer Thermador ovens use F3 differently.

Usual causes of F3

  • Open or shorted oven sensor
  • Crushed molex spring contacts
✓ A safe check worth trying

1. Turn the oven off and let it cool. 2. Restore breaker power after a pause. 3. Do not pull the range out to find the sensor wiring. 4. If F3 returns, call us so we can measure the sensor and check the connector contacts.

! Why you should stop here
  • Sensor testing needs a meter and a 75 F reference.
  • Leg-to-ground and phase checks are technician work.
  • A written quote comes first.
Taking off a panel yourself does not by default void a manufacturer warranty, yet it can lead to accidental damage, and some manufacturers attach their own service terms. Read your warranty paperwork, or ask us, before you decide.

F3F3 questions
Why are the molex contacts mentioned?

The legacy notes say crushed spring contacts cause intermittent errors, so they are checked along with the sensor itself. A bad contact can look like a bad sensor.

Is a reset enough?

It may clear a one-time glitch. A recurring F3 usually means the sensor or its contact needs service, and we explain which before quoting. You get a written quote either way.

What is the 10 percent tolerance?

The sensor should be within 10 percent of 1050 ohms at 75 F. We measure it to see whether it passes, and tell you the reading.
