Thermador Cooktop F5 With a Cool Pan: What the Display Is Telling You

F5 can appear even when your cookware does not feel hot. The reason has to do with where the heat is being sensed.

What F5 is reporting

Thermador documents F5 as a detection of hot cookware near the control panel. The detail that surprises people is that it can trigger when the pan does not feel hot at all. What the cooktop watches is the heat near its control strip, and not the whole pan, so a pan that is warm only at one edge can be enough.

Cookware pushed up against the front control edge can trigger it. Large or oversized pots that overhang the zone toward the controls are a common example.

Steps to clear it

  1. Turn the zone off and lift the cookware away.
  2. Let the zone settle for a few minutes.
  3. Set the pan back, centered on the zone and clear of the front edge.
  4. Turn the zone on again.

Sliding the pan back from the panel edge and giving the zone time to reset normally gets rid of the message.

When positioning is not the answer

If F5 keeps appearing with the pan sitting normally in the middle of the zone, it is no longer a placement issue. At that stage a sensor or control reading may be off, and it is worth a diagnostic visit. We start from the documented meaning, then test the sensing circuit to confirm. You can look up the code on our F5 entry, and see more under cooktop repair.

A hint for daily use: keep handles and wide pot bases turned away from the front of the cooktop, and avoid resting hot lids or utensils near the control strip.

Whenever you are ready, schedule a visit. You get a written price first, and our work is backed by a 30-day workmanship warranty.
