Thermador PRG486WDH

What we most often repair on units like this

  1. Secondary oven that does not light while the main oven works, or the reverse
  2. Griddle section that heats unevenly or cycles off early
  3. Temperature probe that is not recognized by the control
  4. Home Connect that drops off the home network after a router change
  5. Telescopic rack that binds or tilts when loaded

At 48 inches the PRG486WDH is the centerpiece of a large kitchen island or a wall of cabinetry, and it asks more of a technician than a 30-inch range does. Two oven cavities share one gas supply and one 120 V, 20 A feed, so a call that sounds like one oven can easily involve the other.

We start with the basics: does the main cavity (2 cu ft) light and hold temperature, and does the smaller left cavity (1.2 cu ft) do the same. Gas ovens depend on an igniter that draws enough current to open the valve, so a weak igniter is a common cause when the flame appears late or not at all. The griddle and the ExtraLow burners get their own checks because they are used at opposite ends of the heat range.

Thermador lists PRG486WDHT as the successor model. For a unit with Home Connect and a temperature probe, we also confirm the app connection and the probe jack before we blame the control.

PRG486WDHPRG486WDH questions
Only the small left oven stopped heating. Does that mean the whole range needs service?

Not necessarily. The two cavities have separate burners and igniters, so we test the left oven on its own. Often the repair is one igniter or sensor, and the main oven can be used meanwhile.

The meat probe does not register in the oven. What do you check?

We inspect the probe, its jack in the cavity wall and the wiring behind it. A bent tip or a dirty socket is common, and we confirm the control sees the probe before testing any larger part.

Can the griddle be repaired without pulling the range out?

Often yes. Many griddle issues are the burner under it, its ignition or a gas supply issue, which we can reach from the front. If the range must be moved, we shut off and disconnect the gas first.
