If your cooktop shows dE and refuses to heat, nothing is broken. It is a documented display state with a simple way out.
Seeing dE on a Thermador induction or electric cooktop means the demo setting is switched on. It is a real, documented display state that was meant for showroom units, not a malfunction. If a cooktop was powered on without ever leaving that mode, or was reset for some reason, it will not heat any zone for as long as dE stays on the display.
The timing matters. If you wait longer than the window, the cooktop may not accept the touch, and you can simply repeat the sequence from the beginning.
Demo mode can follow a reset, or a unit that was set up without leaving the mode. Whatever the route, the good news is that the heating hardware is usually fine, which is why the fix costs nothing.
When dE reappears right after you complete that sequence, a repeat attempt will not help. That is the time for a technician to look at the control and its settings. Our dE code entry covers it in more detail, and you can see everything we handle on our cooktop repair page.
Because demo mode blocks heating by design, there is no reason to suspect burners or elements while it shows. Wait to judge the cooktop until the display has returned to normal and a zone has been tested with a pan.
