Induction Zone Ignoring Your Pan? Why a Thermador Cooktop Misses Cookware

Before blaming a sensor, rule out the most common non-repair cause first. A simple magnet test on the bottom of the pan tells you a lot.

Start with the pan

The way induction heats requires a pan that is both magnetic and nearly flat underneath. Here is an easy test: hold a refrigerator magnet to the underside of the pan. If it sticks firmly, the pan is a candidate. If it slides off or barely clings, the zone will not see it.

Pans the zone will pass over

  • Pans with bottoms that bowed out of true.
  • Stainless sets lacking a magnetic layer in the base.
  • Bare aluminum or copper pans not designed for induction.

None of these produce an error. The zone relies on magnetism to work, so the zone behaves as though nothing were sitting there.

Also check the basics

  1. Center the pan over the marked zone.
  2. Wipe the glass clean and dry under the pan.
  3. Try a pan you know has worked before.

When the picture changes

Things look different when a pan that used to work suddenly goes unnoticed, or when one zone rejects every pan you try. Then the cookware is no longer to blame, and attention moves to the coil under the glass or the sensor monitoring it, and that is a diagnostic job, not a kitchen fix.

We test the zone with known-good cookware, read the coil, and check the electronics that drive it, replacing only what has failed. Details are on our cooktop repair page.

Size matters too. A very small pan on a large zone may not register, so try a pan close to the zone’s marked circle before drawing conclusions.

If a single zone has gone quiet, book a visit. We provide a written price before work, and repairs come with a 30-day workmanship warranty.
