What E9 means

E9 on a legacy Thermador CT or CMT oven with the Dreefs control concerns the door latch. The second page of the service document says the latch motor may run while its switches fail to cycle, and recommends replacing the latch in the affected oven. Heat shuts off in that oven. Turning the oven off stops the message, which then reappears only when the selector is set to CLEAN.

Usual causes of E9

  • Latch switch not changing state while the latch motor runs
  • Worn or failed latch assembly, the part the source says to replace
  • Loose latch wiring (a technician check on the way to the latch)
✓ A safe check worth trying

1. Turn the selector to OFF and tweak it slightly counterclockwise to stop the flashing and beeping. 2. Cut power to the oven for a moment at the breaker and restore it, as the document advises for E9. 3. Bake normally. 4. Do not start CLEAN; if E9 stays with the selector OFF, call us.

! Why you should stop here
  • A self-clean cycle with a bad latch can leave the door unable to lock or unlock
  • Latch replacement means working inside the door area with power off
  • We quote in writing and confirm legacy parts by model number first
Taking off a panel yourself does not by default void a manufacturer warranty, yet it can lead to accidental damage, and some manufacturers attach their own service terms. Read your warranty paperwork, or ask us, before you decide.

E9E9 questions
Why does E9 only show up in CLEAN?

The latch is only demanded during cleaning, when the door must lock. Normal baking skips that test, so the control stays quiet until you pick CLEAN.

Can I force the door open if it sticks?

Please do not. Forcing a latch can bend the mechanism or glass. If the door seems stuck, switch the oven off at the breaker, let it cool, and call us.

Does resetting the power fix the latch?

It clears the message but cannot repair a latch whose switches do not cycle. If E9 returns in CLEAN, the latch is the likely culprit and needs inspection.
