Thermador PCG486GD

What we most often repair on units like this

  1. A gas odor means closing the shutoff valve, and then checking for flame carryover between burners, since Thermador's service guidance advises calling a technician if the burners fail to pass flame along
  2. Cold spots on the griddle most likely come from its own electric element or the 6-pass wiring, and the gas burners are not involved
  3. Because the pedestal burners (QuickClean Base) are raised, look beneath them for spill residue when ignition becomes unreliable

Fire on the left, electric heat on the right: the PCG486GD is an earlier Professional Series rangetop, 48 inches wide, with four 18,000 BTU (NG) Pedestal Star Burners, two ExtraLow burners that can simmer as low as 100°F, and an electric griddle drawing 1,630 watts through a 6-pass element. It is the forerunner of the PCG486WD and shares its QuickClean Base pedestal design.

The electric griddle is the feature that sets the service approach. It has nothing to do with the gas burners, so a plate that stays cold or heats in patches is diagnosed separately, by testing its element and wiring, while the four burners and two simmer burners follow ordinary pedestal-burner troubleshooting.

Pedestal burners let spills settle under the base, so unreliable ignition sends us there first. Flame that does not carry from one burner to the next is a separate point that we inspect on any gas burner showing it.

PCG486GDPCG486GD questions
My griddle is hot on one side only. Is the gas the problem?

No, this griddle is electric. Cold patches trace to its own heating element or wiring, so we test those directly and leave the gas burners out of the diagnosis.

What does flame carryover mean?

It is the way a lit burner passes flame along to the next one. Thermador's guidance says to call a technician if burners do not carry flame properly, so we inspect the burner and igniter.

What is the lowest setting of the two simmer burners?

They simmer down to 100°F, which is around 375 BTU. If one cannot hold that gentle setting anymore, its knob and valve are what we test first.
