What F51 means

On older Thermador C-series, CM-series and CJ302 built-in ovens, F51 means the control believes the upper oven door is stuck in the unlocked state. During a cleaning cycle that matters, because the oven wants proof the door is latched before it heats. If you own one of these legacy ovens and see F51, the cycle or bake will not continue until the latch signal makes sense again.

Usual causes of F51

  • Upper door latch or latch switches that are worn, defective or jammed
  • Wiring at the upper latch header on the power/relay board
  • Power/relay board, if the code stays after the latch checks
✓ A safe check worth trying

1. Make sure nothing is wedged in the upper door gap and the door is fully closed. 2. Touch OFF or turn the oven breaker off for 3 minutes. 3. Restore power and see whether F51 returns. 4. If it does, record the code and your model number, and stop using the upper oven until we look at it.

! Why you should stop here
  • The latch motor and switches sit inside the door frame and need disassembly
  • A latch that really is stuck can be forced and damaged by pulling on the door
  • Testing the board side requires a meter on a powered circuit
Taking off a panel yourself does not by default void a manufacturer warranty, yet it can lead to accidental damage, and some manufacturers attach their own service terms. Read your warranty paperwork, or ask us, before you decide.

F51F51 questions
Why does an unlocked door trigger a code?

The oven uses the latch as a safety signal. If the control sees the door as unlocked when it should be locked, it cannot run a high-heat cycle safely, so it stops and shows F51.

Can I keep using the lower oven?

The source describes the code for the upper oven only. Many owners keep using the other cavity, but we cannot promise that for every model, so ask us when you book.

Does this need a new board?

Not usually first. The source points at the latch switches before the power/relay board, so a technician checks those and the wiring before recommending parts.
