F54 is the older Thermador C, CM and CJ302 oven code for a shorted upper latch input. In plain terms, the line carrying the upper door latch signal is reading as shorted, so the control cannot tell whether the latch is working. The oven stops rather than guess. It sits with F50 to F53 as part of the same upper-door group in the service document.
1. Switch the oven off at the control or breaker. 2. Count three minutes, then power it back up. 3. If F54 clears, use the oven normally but note the date. 4. If it returns, record the code and the model number and book a visit. Avoid opening panels.
It is the signal wire that tells the control whether the door latch is engaged. When that wire reads shorted, the control gets no usable answer and stops the oven.
Both involve the upper door group. F50 is the door signal shorted low, while F54 names the latch input itself as shorted. Both are checked at the same switches and headers.
Wiping the visible door gap with the oven cold is fine. The switches themselves are inside the unit, so anything deeper is technician work. We explain what we find and put the price in writing first.
Our technician checks it in your home and hands you a written price before touching anything.
