Thermador DW244UB

What we most often repair on units like this

  1. Will not turn on or start: begin with the breaker or fuse box and the dedicated 120V/12A circuit, then verify the Terminal Box wiring, and confirm that the shut-off valve on the water line is open
  2. Dishes come out wet: this platform dries on heat from the supply, so water at the inlet should reach 140°F rather than relying on a powered element
  3. Water stays in the tub or the cycle stops midway: the drain hose should rise in a high loop or air gap of no less than 20 inches (508mm) over the floor, which stops back-siphoning; also check the hose for kinks and for a leftover disposer knockout plug
  4. Door will not stay shut or opens during a cycle: spring tension is set by Torx T20 adjustment screws near the base, so a small screwdriver adjustment, not a new part, is the first thing to try

The DW244UB belongs to an older Thermador undercounter family: the DW244UW, DW245UB/UW and DW246UB/UW/US are its siblings, and the panel-ready DWI246UB/UW joins them. Because one common set of Care & Use and Installation manuals describes the lot, they are the same machine mechanically and electrically, only with different exteriors. Thermador’s numbered error codes of today (E22, E15 and the like) do not cover this generation, so we diagnose it by what it is doing, not by a code lookup.

Two points are particular to this platform. Its drying comes from the heat of the supply water, which has to be 140°F (60°C) because there is no powered drying element, and the drain line needs a high loop or an air gap of at least 20 inches over the floor so wastewater cannot siphon back into the tub. When a unit stops mid-cycle or leaves water standing, we test both of those and the dedicated 120V/12A circuit before suspecting the pump or motor. Because this family is old, we describe what we find in plain terms and give you a price in writing ahead of any repair.

Key features

  • Older Thermador undercounter platform, 24 inches wide, that came before the DWHD model-number convention
  • Needs its own line: a 12-amp grounded 120V/60Hz circuit
  • Drying relies on hot supply water, which must measure 140°F (60°C) when it reaches the inlet; no Zeolite or heat-pump system is involved
  • Leveling: turn the front legs by hand; the rear leg moves with a center screw reached from the front of the base, so nothing behind the unit needs touching

DW244UBDW244UB questions
Why must the water reach 140°F?

No powered element does the drying on this platform, so the hot supply water does it, and water arriving cooler than 140°F leaves dishes clearly wetter once the cycle ends. That is why a water heater set too low shows up as damp dishes, and why we measure the temperature at the inlet instead of guessing.

The door no longer latches as firmly. Should I worry?

Often it is only spring tension that has drifted with age. A Torx T20 screwdriver turns the adjustment screws near the base, so this is not a sign of deeper trouble. It is worth checking that before assuming the latch itself has failed, and it needs nothing beyond the screwdriver named here.

Why do you check the drain hose when water stays in the tub?

A hose without a high loop or air gap 20 inches above the floor can let wastewater flow back. Kinks and an unremoved disposer plug cause the same thing. Each of those can keep the pump from clearing the tub, so they are checked before the pump or motor is blamed.
